Pereira's apps were acquired by Square Off in early 2021. Following this acquisition, the apps were effectively discontinued. Unfortunately, there is no fix. On Android, the best current alternative is probably Kalab's Chess PGN Master. On Windows, Lucas Chess is probably the closest to what you are looking for in terms of flexibility. If you need to manage large databases (and find puzzles based on specific patterns), SCID vs. PC is the standard. Chessbase is also okay.
What happened to the iChess Android app ?
Grazie, Kromok2. My old UCIs don't have an app to present puzzles. I have Chess PGN Master but it's graphics & operation don't seem as 'elegant' as iChess did. The files purchased with iChess must be hidden or obfuscated as I can't find them. Ciao.
Ciao, the files you bought are almost certainly in Android app-specific storage, which is why you can't find them, and there is no official export (and no way to convert them into PGN for Chess PGN Master). Without "rooting" your device (or using ADB workarounds), you're unlikely to get those files out. If you still can, a more realistic path is run iChess on an older device where it still works and treat it as a "legacy" puzzle set. Alternatively, you can use Chess PGN Master with new puzzle PGNs from Chess dotcom, Lichess or other sources. Ciao ![]()
Grazie. Recently installed Lucas Chess R 2.21 . It includes a dozen puzzle files, but I'm unable to load my own files. Tools has option "Read PGN file", but it just lists the positions with a small diagram on the right. Option "Learn tactics by repetition" has a submenu "Personal tactics", but this does nothing.
Frustrating that none of my Windows apps will present an interactive puzzle from a users file. Most of these are old, but I have Winboard, Shredder, Komodo and Hiarcs. I have dozens of files with thousands of positions collected over 12 years.
Again, ciao ( my wife speaks the Southern dialect ).
Ciao, "Read PGN file" is a database window, not a trainer; to turn a PGN into a puzzle session you must press the "Train" button from that windows, that's how "Personal Tactics" gets pupulated. In order to start a tactics training session from the list of positions, while the PGN list windows is open, press the "Train" button to populate "Personal Tactics". If you don't see a "Train" button, try the menu inside that. "Personal Tactics" is not a PGN loader, it's the home for puzzles you've previously loaded via the "Train" path or via the "Personal Trainings" system. If you've never "trained" from a PGN yet, there is nothing there yet (and the menu item does nothing). Besides, ensure your PGN actually contain "games", not just "static" positions. Check that you allowed Lucas Chess to create/update its "UserData" folder (avoid running from write-protected folders).

And finally, if you're ok with "online" for one session: 1) on Lichess, create a "Study" from your PGN and use the "Study's Practice" feature to generate puzzles; 2) on Chess dotcom, you can paste/load a PGN into "Analysis" and manually step through as puzzles (no built-in "puzzle mode" for custom PGN, though).

iChess Pro by Asim Pereira has been my favorite tablet & phone app for over ten years. It displays puzzles from a pgn file such as :
[White "Giri"]
[Black "Cuijpers"]
[Result "1-0"]
[SetUp "1"]
[FEN "kr3R2/1p4Q1/2p5/3n4/p3q3/8/1P4P1/R5K1 w - - 0 40"]
40. Qe5 1-0
{ source Svitlana }
It stopped working on phone after Android updated. Recently stopped on my Galaxy S2 tablet. The Google App store no longer lists it ( there are other apps containing 'iChess' ).
Is it available anywhere ? Are there other Android or Windows apps that display puzzle pgn files?
