What is Woodtek?

Recently saw a new arrival from HOS and the set looks great. Love the grain of the white pieces but I have no idea where it is made and what it is made from even after reading the details of the set. Anyone out there know anything about "woodtek"?

This is a very good question.

From the pictures on the link the pieces are glossy looking like a bakelite kind of plastic.  The cost of the set is relatively low also making me think it is some kind of plastic kind of material.  I see they have the same set, at the same price in a "Metallic" version.  Once again I bet this is some kind of plastic from this viewpoint.

I Googled "Woodtek" and the vast majority of the results talked about a brand of wood working equipment.  After a couple of pages of this I went onto other things.

Same thing here Ron. I Googled it and came out with machinery.  It does look like a "fake" wood.   But the set itself looks pretty good and if this is a new way of making plastic sets, looks seemless, then it will be most welcome especially in matte finishes. I like the 4.25 tall king.

Apparently made of a strong resin. Iirc there is a reference in the description or reviews to "sprucetek" faux wood grain appearance.

I looked at the HOS eBay listing and they have it as plastic. I can see the seams on the metallic color easier than on the white and deep burgundy color set.  No extra queens and at that price chess players expect it. SO since they have no country of origin listed my guess is China.  Why didn't they just go ahead and order the set with extra queens as I am sure most that buy it will request or ask about it anyways.  Or they could have gave an option for an extra $10.00.

Those colors and grains are striking in the white (blonde) wood grain and deep burgundy set.

Hey, loubalch, didn't you have a similar set at one time?

This does look like the same type of material:  https://www.amazon.com/Large-Staunton-Gloss-Cherry-Burlwood/dp/B012TYPQ1M/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1499641124&sr=8-5&keywords=chess+set+faux+wood

And now that I compare the pictures on Amazon and on HoS they look identical.

I know that if you google, nero high polymer chess set, you will find a very similar chess set. The height and weight are about the same so are the knights and white pieces. The dark pieces are different in color, but I believe that both sets are plastic weighted pieces

Shelby, I’m joining the discussion a bit behind.  I gave the set available from Amazon to my son.  Quite affordable, good looking, extra weight, extra queens.  The pieces are brown vs natural. Is there a source for the same set, but deep burgundy (blood cherry) vs natural, extra weight and extra queens?

Thanks for your feedback!  I believe the Amazon ones are described as “dark brown” and “light brown.”  Do your sets come with the extra queens?  Are you able to source the “Kasparov” edition?

With your current set, are extra queens available on their own without buying a whole second set?  Thanks again for your help.
