What (or who) is Jogo Aberto ?

Hi All - I got this VERY nice (to me anyway) wooden set in today with 4" Kings and nicely weighted. It was made in Brazil and has the label for Jogo Aberto on it. Are they a retailer? The black pieces truly are- Not stained or painted. I know it isn't an exact copy but the pieces remind me of the Kavalek v. Karpov set from Buenos Aires 1980. I LOVE the unusual Knights  and the extra detail around the turrets on the Rooks. Also the green baize is as nice as any Jaques piece felt I have held. Thanks for looking Laughing

Gorgeous set, Ron!

BTW, I believe Jogo Aberto means Open Game in Portugese. Perhaps Arlindo will enlighten us.

Jogo Aberto, Arte em Jogos

JOGO ABERTO = Open Game.

ARTE EM JOGOS = The art in games.

I saw the logo in the box above, and it says the tel number starts with DDD (long distance code in Brazil, or interestate code) 011, which means the company is in Sao Paulo City area.

In fact, the box seems to be old, because of the 011 code.

Nowadawys, the code area of Sao Paulo City is 11.

The ZERO was eliminated some years ago ( I think 5 or more years).

Here are some pictures of my Amazonia Premiere chess pieces, also made by Jogo Aberto. 4" kings also. The white pieces are made of brazilian ivorywood, and the dark ones are made of imbuia.

This set came with a protective case. According to an included brochure, every piece was made of a single block of wood.

Wonderful Set Sir!! I love my set. The pieces are incredibly smooth and the wood is some of the finest I have ever seen. Your set may have been made to a much higher standard than mine. I have heard Jogo Aberto advertised in some of the old issues of Inside Chess back in the 1980's so I will try to find some ads of that time. Thanks for the Great Pics !!

Well ... Some confusions:
The photo of the game between Karpov and Kavalek, has nothing to do with the chess pieces down either Ron or those of
informaticcobach29
This game was played in Argentina and on the board are the pieces that can be considered the National Set of Argentina. Today this Set is to be replaced by another (see picture).
Both games are very beautiful and are part of the history of Argentine Chess.

Today classic in Argentina clubs, and tournaments:

In Brazil there are two sets that can be considered Brazilian chess heritage. Bragança Set  (the pieces of Ron) and the Amazonia Set.
The design differences  between the two are visible and that the Amazon is more elaborate in the Khights, and in the finish of the pieces, and because of that more expensive.
For me, they are two of most beautiful Staunton sets in the world and the yellowish color of the white pieces in contrast to the deep black of Brazil wood makes these sets a work of art.
Used in clubs, international tournaments in Brazilian Championships, these sets  are gradually being replaced by the chilling vulgarity  Indian sets "Germam Knight" flooding the market, or the plastic untyped. A sadness for Brazilian chess.
I'm not sure, if they still produce, but someone have a link that someone , the Master
Dirk Van Dagobert Riemsdijk, seems to produce the Amazonia Set I think "Jogo Aberto" was a retail firm, not the manufacturer sets.

In the 80-90 the Chess Review “Inside Chess”  of Yasser Seirawan promotes and sell the Amazonia Set, and at that the price was no joke!

Congratulation Ron and  informaticacobach29. you have two works of art , marvelous  worked,  and two true jewels of Staunton chess pieces , besides being a brand chess image of a country- Brazil, the country of Câmara, Valadão, Mecking, Vescovi, Leitão, and so on.

See my post on Bragança chess pieces. Thanks

Excellent Chuck!! I LOVE my knights in this set! One very nice example of where less is more IMHO. And the  rooks remind me a little of our Soviet sets no? Only a lot more solid. Congrats Laughing

Great information - Thank You Sir Smile. I LOVE the beautiful wood in these pieces. The lighter pieces almost have a gold or orange tone and the black pieces almost seem to absorb light. This set is definitely one of my favorites.

Thanks, Ron. And double thanks, as your posts really brought the simple beauty of this set to my attention. I searched it on Google, and came up with an old Ebay posting  of an incomplete set. I tracked down the seller, who didn't even remember if he had it. He searched for it, relisted it, and I bought it quite reasonably. Of course there will be an expense for replacing the missing pieces, but it will be well worth it as I cannot wait to play with this set.

Chuck, are you going to bring this to Alan Dewey for repair and replacement of pieces?

Ron, it's already in the works!
