When non-chess players sell chess equipment -FAIL-

Sort:

I was pretty lucky. There was a set on sale, starting bid at twenty-five dollars and five for shipping. The seller did not say what kind of set it was, the type of wood, nor the size. All he said was that one of the pawns had a chip on it and that he got it that way. There were just three pics. This was the first:

And one of just the box:

Yet nothing of scale to reveal its size. And then the one with the chipped pawn:

Now that one made me stop and think. If it was a boxwood set that was stained black then the chip would reveal its boxwood innards. But it looked dark. I went back to the first pic and looked closely at the pieces in the box. They looked striped.

It turned out that no one else was interested and so I was the lone bidder. I ended up with the set for thirty dollars, shipping included.

It arrived and turned out to be a set of 3.75" kings, weighted nicely, and very similiar - albeit not exactly - to the Rejkyavik set, made of boxwood and striped ebony.

Thirty bucks. I like.

Nice find!  Very nice set, especially for only $30.00 US, makes it even nicer!

I had a pawn chip like that too.  Luckily I found the piece that fell off and was able to glue it back on.

I had an ear brake off of Honey Rosewood pieces too, did not find the pieces that broke off; I was able to fix that one with wood filler, a file, and a stain pen.  Amazingly, you can’t even tell, unless I point it out and you look very closely.

That collar on the pawn might be a little tougher to fix without the piece that broke off.

Very nice set!!!  Cool

I know everyone likes pictures, here is the knights ear I fixed:

Oh yeah, almost forgot, i used a toothpick too, to shape the inside of the ear.  The fix is more noticeable in these pictures than when you have the piece in your hand.

Plastic? Wooden? You choose!

Nice work on that ear. Hardly noticeable and even then, only with a zoom.

Maybe they meant to type, "Here are some extra plastic chess pieces I found on the floor, I put them on a wooden table for this pciture (wooden table not included)."  Laughing

At the Hunter's Point Park in Queens, the chessboards are built into the tables. If you sit the way you are supposed to, the black squares are on the right side of the board.

Yup... you don't see chess players there too often.

That's one of Murphy's Laws:

"If you have a 50 per cent chance of success, you have a 75 per cent chance of failure."

From this ebay auction:

Here is a pluze... white play and mate in 3...

No really, how they got to that position?

Some things to consider. The black have made at least double the number of moves than the whites, the blacks have the bishops on the same colors, all the pieces still ion the board, still both players manage to have powns on the same lines... How???

The description of the set tells us this:

"All the kings horses and all the kings men are proud to grace this deluxe set with attractive inlaid, wooden chessboard"

Now looking things deeper there is a picture of the set on the original box, and it makes as much sense as the ebay picture:

On e-bay some sellers apply the adjective "Staunton" to any chess set, even those with human figures, modern art, etc., etc.

One wonders just what is their misguided definition of the word? They probably think it means, classic, or just good.

And this guys have being posting all sort of sets claiming them to be the Dubrovnik, Fisher's favorite set:

They basically take any set and change the tips of the bishops and call it the Duv...

The description on ebay reads:

"World champion Bobby Fischer bought a Dubrovnik set in 1970 and later proclaimed it his favourite chess set ever. Sadly, his set was later stolen. By his request, the set was shortly reissued in 1992 for the second time and used again in Fischer/Spassky world championship rematch. This is the later version of Dubrovnik chess set, world known design."

Oh, give the poor guy a break.

I never understood why this well-known retailer always posted these weird positions. (Of course we know why, but still...)

Everyone's favorite opening:

I hate when this happens to me:

And after the contest all the players meet on the field to congratulate each other on the good game:

I can explain the second picture.

White's last move was Nc8+=R

EDIT: Didn't see the knight also giving check. Dang.

One thing I find with this seller is every picture of the knight is a profile shot (from the side).  The knight has other angles!  Would be nice if they posted a few pictures face on at least... I find this annoying.

I noticed in the second shot one of the knights was on a slight angle, that is rare to catch on that website... as for the possition... Laughing   I wish I knew that trap Laughing (I am kidding)
