I was pretty lucky. There was a set on sale, starting bid at twenty-five dollars and five for shipping. The seller did not say what kind of set it was, the type of wood, nor the size. All he said was that one of the pawns had a chip on it and that he got it that way. There were just three pics. This was the first:
And one of just the box:
Yet nothing of scale to reveal its size. And then the one with the chipped pawn:
Now that one made me stop and think. If it was a boxwood set that was stained black then the chip would reveal its boxwood innards. But it looked dark. I went back to the first pic and looked closely at the pieces in the box. They looked striped.
It turned out that no one else was interested and so I was the lone bidder. I ended up with the set for thirty dollars, shipping included.
It arrived and turned out to be a set of 3.75" kings, weighted nicely, and very similiar - albeit not exactly - to the Rejkyavik set, made of boxwood and striped ebony.
Thirty bucks. I like.
Nice find! Very nice set, especially for only $30.00 US, makes it even nicer!
I had a pawn chip like that too. Luckily I found the piece that fell off and was able to glue it back on.
I had an ear brake off of Honey Rosewood pieces too, did not find the pieces that broke off; I was able to fix that one with wood filler, a file, and a stain pen. Amazingly, you can’t even tell, unless I point it out and you look very closely.
That collar on the pawn might be a little tougher to fix without the piece that broke off.
Very nice set!!!
