I've owned 6 HOS sets ver the years and I can tell you most of them are carved in Mexico. A few are from India the Plastic ones from China. That notwithstanding HOS sets are the best out there. All the other retailers sets are fine also. So why split hairs about where they come from? The workmanship differs from craftsman to craftsman but most try to keep things the same through out their production runs.

If that's the case, then where do the Mexican artisans get their Asiatic woods like boxwood, sheesham, rosewood, etc.? Import them from India?

I currently own 13 HoS sets and have owned about 23 of them over the years.

More importantly, I personally know Frank Camaratta and have been talking with him and then the new owner of HoS, Shawn, since 1998, about chess sets and where they have them made.

I know of no sets that were made in Mexico that they have created.  In fact the contracts they have for their sets come exclusively from India.

A museum piece just recently finished.  Its The MacGregor's versus the Campbell's by Jimarnoldchess.  A massive set at 30" square by 17" tall.  I've made over 2,000 sets in hundreds of different themes.  I can make you something very special too!

Thanks Shelby!  Have to go back and check my notes...haven't made a set that small in a few years.  The set pictured with the wenge table features a 5" tall king with a 2" base..pawns about 2.5" with a 1 and 3/8ths base.  I don't ever have time to have an inventory...I've gone from one commission to the next for the last 20 years, sometimes being booked two years in advance.

Jim, I would be interested in more information on your sets as well. If you could PM me here, or email kndreyn@yahoo.com I would appreciate it.

Nothing is made in the United States anymore. We exported all our manufacturing, looking for cheap labor and huge profits.

imsighked2,  For the greater part, I agree with what you say...however, I've been making and selling chess sets here in North Carolina and Florida for the last 20 years, not that I am a large manufacturer or anything, but I use pear wood and walnut and maple and holly grown on my own property to make the sets...once in a while I'll try something different like that Wenge and Ash.  I tried several times to expand, but couldn't find anybody that wanted to work.

Very cool. I try to buy locally when I can . . . it's getting increasingly difficult to do so . . .

Hi, I found that my set of Staunton Chess pieces are from the carvers of chessmen from the Amritsar region in India. They use the highest quality wood including African Padauk, Boxwood, Ebony, Golden Rosewood, and Rosewood. The chess sets are heavily weighted, have green baize pads, and include spare queens.

Here is a pic of my set, called Khan's Stallion Staunton Chess Set in Ebony & Boxwood - 4.25" King from the Chess Store.
