Thank you.. I never knew there was a store here. Completely missed it.
Where to buy chessboard from?

Veneer or solid wood is always a question. I have several solid wood boards and three veneer boards. There is a lot of satisfaction in the solid wood (2 Drueke, 1 Colorado Wood Worker), but the 2 Polish veneer boards are beautiful - and very nicely made (one purchased in Krakow, the other in Berlin). A third veneer board was an expensive disappointment (gave it away).

Thanks for the suggestion. I have found myself at the veneer vs solid point. There is a rather nice one on chess.com / HOS that meets my criteria but it is pricey (likely due to the cost of shipping to Australia) so I'm a bit nervous to purchase in case it ends up the same as the others.
Due to that one of the custom made ones of etsy does seem to fit the bill but I've read some reviews of solid wood boards warping over time...
Decisions decisions.

@maraach My suggestion to you is to ask the vendor to take a photos of the board they will send to you. I did this before with JK Creative on Etsy. They sent me a photo of the 18” borderless board before I made the purchase.
As for warping, I bought a board from JK Creative, Dovetail Artistry, and Colorado Woodworker from Etsy in 2019/2020. All 3 are still flat. The humidity is pretty consistent where I live so that probably played a big role in that.

Colorado wood worker was my first stop but postage here makes it an expensive purchase (think shipping was close to $300).
I've found another board maker from Greece who seems to do nice work SakisTsiogkasWood. His postage is about $150 - so leaning towards him for the moment.
This does put them near the cost of the HOS Drueke boards - so just trying to work out which should be the better quality board.

Absolutely correct. 2” squares and likely to add another of his with larger squares, different wood choices and design…. In the meantime, I’m struggling to find pieces to fit my 1.5” square board…. At that size (2.5” king) the pieces lack definition -

Sorry my imperial isn't great - 1.5" is 40mm?
If so we use these for our "travel" set and for the size I've found them excellent -

Not in Oceania but maybe they ship there, anywhere here in the UK I buy from https://www.regencychess.co.uk/ and only them. Most of their boards are made in Spain by R.F, like most of the best. Pieces, well can't go wrong with Staunton.
Here's my pride and joy:

Beautiful images KeresC!
I’m juggling boards and pieces - love the Polish veneer, so will use my Polish pieces with it when I get them back from my brother…. Urghhh!
In the meantime, I’ll enjoy these these pieces on the board. I enjoy both components enormously, but they don’t quite fit together [3” king / 1.4” base vs 1.6” square]. My brother has my 1.75” square Drueke board which will be perfect for these pieces…
I think I’m going to offer him something in trade to ransom my stuff… 🙄

Lovely set but yes the pieces look just a touch too big for it - definitely playable though. Next time I get the analysis/ travel set out I'll take a photo but the 2.8" ones I linked fit beautifully on a 40mm square (which I think is a 1.6"?). Wouldn't be quite at the same quality as those pieces though I suspect.
Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions of where to buy nice wooden chess boards? I've tried my luck a couple of times with the well known Indian stores and whilst I've generally been pretty happy with the pieces I've been dissapointed with the boards. The first one had minor damage to the edges of some of the outer squares and the notation on the board had already started rubbing off before I even received it.
I thought myself unlucky so tried again but the next board was even worse - it looks like a second - looks like the edges have been damaged and repainted to the point where you can see paint runs and scratches in the wood. The third travel one (folding) bought at the same time as the second began to fall apart after the second time of use.
am I being too fussy? I'm still new to this whole chess thing but $300 for a board seems a reasonable amount to spend... and I'm finding issues I didn't have on my $40 amazon set I'm moving from.
either way any recommendations on where to buy boards? I'm located in Australia so will need to find somewhere that can ship here at a reasonable rate.
