Start by playing games, that is the best way to improve.
Your welcome to play a game against me.
Try a "search the forums" (the box in the upper right hand corner) for "best beginner book" or something similat and you'll find dozens of previous threads with lively discussions and more advice than you will probably know what to do with. Check out the study plans that are on site (click "read", then "articles", then "chess.com help"). Without a premium membership you won't have access to all the resources recommended, but at least you will have an idea of the path to take. Besides playing, the study of tactics is generally considered the most effective path to improvement. Pattern recognition is crucial and tactics work for that. Most of all, have fun and welcome to the game.

Thank you
Play for fun, and if you like it and want to get better, study and learn from your mistakes.

Enjoy the road, whichever way it leads you.
I would do two things. First, play some live games here. Second, start studying tactics. I would read a tactics book. The one I used is available online: Predator at the Chessboard. Once you go through a book and are familiar with what patterns you are looking for, you might want to start using a tactics trainer like the one they have here.
Hello,i am Berkay. I'm 16 years old. I've played starcraft semi-professionally,but i am trying to reduce amount of time i spend on video games. My friends told me that i should give a chance to chess. I know basic rules. But I do not know anything tactical about this game,i am not experienced. Last time i've played chess was like 2 years ago in school.
What books do you recommend for a starter? I only know basic rules(where to place pieces to en passant).
I can use this website(live chess) for practicing (1 hour/day).
Thank you very much.
