You don't have to buy any books. What about playing some OTB chess now ? Smile

Books are totally useless. If you want to learn chess, and you are serious, you should do at least 10thousand tactic positions (and know them well for at least a 70% of them) which would include checkmates in 2-3-4 moves.

Then you need a coach, and you need to play a lot of tournament games (if you want to become a master level player, then practically every weekend you need to play a tournament, and then analyze your games).

If however you have money to spend, buy a 1 year subscription to chess.com, and in chess mentor there is everything you need to know at club player level.

You don't actually have to buy any books. A well annotated collection of any world champion's games is a good addition to any chess library.

All good advice! Their are some good instruction books out there but, are few & inbetween. Silman writes good books for the average player though.

Silman's books are totally worthless. You can see it from the price of the used ones on Amazon, less than 3 dollars. If you add the fact that Silman never produced a single good player, you know why it is useless to read his books.

Your advice is less than worthless. Carlsen said he studied a lot of chess books. Also, the price of a book has nothing to do with if it's a good book or not.

I recommend that you take a Logic 101 class.

I was talking for the average player & not an advanced player. Silmans endgame book has won me more games than I can count. Most average players have no clue as to what to do in the endgame. They are for average players quite good at tatics.

I guess you have absolutely no respect for the work of the authors.

How pathetic...

Avatar of Lou-for-you

Well your guess is wrong. I have some 200 classic books on chess and some 150 electronic ones. However most of them are now downloadable on the internet. If this is pathetic, then the modern world is pathetic.. one big pathetic symphony. I do not rule the world.
