Endgame Strategy by Shereshevsky would be a good choice if you want to get serious about that phase of the game.

It's not a compendium of endings but rather of endgame ideas, a way of thinking about endgame characteristics. Naturally such expertise shapes one's middlegame.

An excerpt from an Amazon review:

"I have never seen an end game book with a chapter about not hurrying in the endgame. An example would be that repeating moves in many positions is fine, because most people have a tendency of breaking the repetition. In many instances that will make their position worse. He also talks about preventing counter play in the endgame which is closely linked to the concept of not hurrying. In addition problems involving whether or not to exchange pieces and how and what to exchange are clearly covered.Shereshevsky also talks about the importance of the economy of pawn play.Topics such as alternating maneuvers against two weaknesses along with king centralization are also discussed along with many other endgame topics of great importance."

Havn't read any of Silman's stuff or Dvorsky's. Pick a player you like and have simular playing qualities and buy some game collections/books from them. I find that generally more enjoyable than reading stuff from another author.

For openings, I recommend Mastering the Chess Openings Series by John Watson. As for middlegame, I recommend the 1953 Zurich International by Dvid Bronstein.

I am not a strong player, but I think Nimzowitsch´s "My System" helped me to improve a bit. Another very interesting book is imho Isaac Lipnitsky´s "Questions of Modern Chess Theory".

Finally I would like to recommend David Bronstein´s "The Sorcerer´s Apprentice".

If you wanna learn the Queens Gambit, buy Playing the Queens Gambit, a grandmaster guide by GM Lars Schandorff. Attacking Chess 1 and 2 is awesome to! And improve your chess by learning from the champions by Lars Bo Hansen is nice to!
