Will styrofoam inserts damage wooden chess pieces over time?

I've just bought a wooden chess set from House of Staunton, and it came safely packed with each piece in its own plastic bag and inserted into shaped slots in a styrofoam (?) insert, so no piece could move about or knock into other pieces.  I won't be using the bags again, but the styrofoam inserts and the box look like a good and safe storage solution. However. I'm wondering if this styrofoam insert is likely to cause any harm to the finish of the pieces over time.  What do you think?
