here's some updated pics of the War of 1812 set, and the sailboat set, I also make a hand-carved version of the original 1849 Staunton set for 1.75", 2", 2.25", and 2.5" square size boards.  I have about 50 or so designs here in this shop...

You must clear with staff such links. Mod.

the War of 1812 set is about 36" square and the top of the King's (Captain's) heads is about 10" above the table the board sits on.  Board is 2" thick Walnut and weighs about 75 pounds.

Sailboat set about 24" square, King's about 6" tall, pawns 3" tall.

Both solid Walnut and Maple throughout...

I'm just scrolling through here and I'll admit that #52 quote is a really cool set. Are they on ball bearings?

I have a friend who own's an ivory set from about 60 years ago. I wonder, is it legal to own? I think it's not legal to sell but beyond that I have no idea.

I think those sets are somewhat excessive. :)

If you are interested #52 is called the Wobble Chass Set (I also think that it is pretty cool). It sells for $250 at http://www.uncommongoods.com/product/wobble-chess-set

I think ivory sets are legal to own as long as they were made before the ban on ivory went into effect.  But I think you can't import them any more.  However, I am not a lawyer.

This is a set I designed and built myself. So far I have made 2 set but plan to make some 3" high version without the drawers for gifts.

Board approx 2" Squares made from Sydney Blue Gum, Silver Ash and Eucalypts burl
King about 4 " high.
White pieces made from Rock Maple
Black Pieces made from Brush Box
Triple weighted with Kangaroo leather feet padding

Very Nice set and Board! Great Job  I like it!

Maybe not "rare" in the traditional sense, but definitely unique, is a homemade set from LEGO pieces.

Yes, I know LEGO sold speciality chess kits for you to build up. My son and I made our own after seeing this and since his is the only one of its kind then I say it's "rare".Smile

Someone mentioned a Batman themed set. Eaglemoss and DC are releasing a new Batman themed set. The pieces are coming out now month by month.

I'm collecting the pieces now. Batgirl and the Riddler were seemingly released in short supply. Some of those pieces go for a lot of money on eBay. I, of course, and missing those. Frown

Since when is black the bad guy?  White's obviously invading their kingdom!

Doesn't Lego make knights, queens, and other medieval pieces?  I wonder if one needs to even make pieces instead of just buying lego men that fit the part.  I guess that would be the easy way out.

Ask a 6 year old boy and he'll insist on building his own with LEGO pieces rather than buying a set. More fun that way. Right now he's working a set of lemons vs. limes. :-) -- Boris

Maybe if black had complied with the UN sanctions, military intervention wouldn't be necessary!
