Oof. That's pretty awful indeed.
Worst chess set design ever?
I agree. This could very well be the winner of the "worst chess set design ever" prize.
The Bishop looks like something in a cartoon. I expect it to start moving its mouth and start talking anytime now. And look at how it's cracked. The Rook is actually almost smaller than the pawn. The Queen looks like someone took a hacksaw and cut off its top. And there really isn't anything nice at all about the Knight.
MinorPawn97, with the "Dog Turd Interzonal" set for the win!
Officially the worst set I've personally ever seen...

For people who play chess variants here is the "Bulldog" (from Bulldod chess).
No offense to anyone, but you asked for the worse:

In my opinion its the ubiquitous glass sets that are just horrible to play on. Barely any contrast makes it nearly impossible to play on. Not sure why so many people have this.

Here's a BCE (I had to look up Best Chessman Ever) set that looks pretty cool. Not my cuppa but I give them marks for a different approach that's inventive with a thought out design. It's a set that would look appropriate in the Jetson's game room. My wife LOVED the rook.

I went to The Chess Store to find a set I considered ugly and came up with this one. I think it's hideous!

No, i think it was the home made one. (no offence)
See post #14... which I agree with.

I don't like this one either. I think this is stage 3. I do like stage 1 though but I think it is too simple for my taste. I love the knight in stage 1.
I watched their video. I'm warming to stage 1. That would be my choice. The black pieces appear to be gloss whereas the white pieces appear to be a mat finish. This is odd if that is the case. This set could never (realistically) be among the worst set designs.
Just seen this on ebay:
What did they tell the designers? "We need a set that looks fairly stupid, except for the Knights - the Knights need to look really stupid. In fact make the Knights look like they're hopping"
