It won't help with opening - the whole point of 960 was to get away from "standard" openings. However, it may help with strategy as you will find yourself in some unusual positions that will require some thinking. I've just started playing 960 and that's what I like about it.
If you are an absolute beginner just learning "regular" chess, I think it might be better to stick with the regular game for now until you are a bit more familiar with the pieces and how to combine them.

Given that you cannot memorise openings and sequences, will playing this help a beginner get better at regular chess? Ie will it force you to be more considered about the positions?
