The "basics" of chess are not necessarily simple. Pawn structure considerations for instance are sometimes even struggles for titled players to fully grasp (although 1800+ usually has a good handle on it). Basic theoretical endgames is another "key element" of chess, since that is what most games steer towards...but endgames vary greatly in difficulty.

If starting out, then I'd start with chess "opening principles"

and perhaps routine chess puzzles (tactics). You can slowly branch out over time. Next targets of focus might be theoretical endgames, middlegame patterns, positional motifs and so on...but some of these are broad topics that can become complex quickly; no one said mastering chess was easy. Luckily, you can still play decent with some time and practice.

I like beginning with opening principles because there is not any memorization of specific lines required; it is just about following simple guidelines happy.png
