I always wonder , do these coaches teach anything extra other than what you can find on internet or books? Imagine you study books on your own for 10 hrs , I am sure you learn much more than what someone can teach you. I am not against any coach. I just feel this way! I always believed in self learning and nothing is gonna improve unless you work ! To be honest , I had reached peak rating of 2000+ on my own , that too with basic tactical mastery and only two openings. I can't give much time to study chess as I am a university student. I am sure, if I can give time to study chess in a dedicated way , I know I am gonna be much more stronger player! So, I just wanna say that wasting that much money and time doesn't make any sense to me! If you really wanna be pro player , then you must take coaching at highest level, like from a team of GMs.
I agree self learning is big and can get you far. But somebody who can see your weaknesses that you can't, and point you in the direction of what you should teach yourself speeds up the process so much. I am advancing 3 times as fast with a coach then I did in my year of self study.
If he is a FIDE Master why won't he give his name and do lessons over Skype or Zoom? I charge more than $15/ hr and I'm only around 2000 Elo. Then again my lessons are in person so I have to include extra time for commuting (about 1 hr total).
I was going to take lessons from Charles but ultimately decided I wouldn't be able to seriously stick to it and study hard. It would've been wrong to waste his time. BUT.... it's certainly a very good opportunity for any aspiring player that's seriously dedicated to improving. And the advance payment part, that's completely normal. So stop the sniveling and whining. I just have way too much going on right now to take lessons from him... but I definitely would otherwise.

On the contrary, he did give his name and contact information on the very post of this thread, the one that he opened. In case you missed it, here goes:

I can say with certainty that Charlie is legit. In fact, he is a great guy and you will learn a lot from him. I know I did. Highly recommended!!

I know charles personally, we sparred many times and i have seen him coach before, and i consider him a good personal friend. he is not a scammer. Dont spout fear inducing comments like that without evidence.
he does it this way to get more hours and to guarantee people stick to the schedule (and he is quite flexible in accommodating schedule changes if you message him ahead of time). If you feel this method is too risky for you, i believe his non-bundle rate is 25$ an hour. he prefers getting groups of 2-4 students at a time for both a more personal coaching experience and easier logistics on his end.
He is also quite generous with his resources and often trains his students to become chess independent in their studies. Unlike GM's who will happily milk you at $50 + an hour indefinitely . Trust me, you are getting a very good offer at $150 for 10 hours with Charles.
Well ok but like he said it seems sus that he won't give you any lessons until you pay him $150. Just my opinion
I’ve taken bundled lessons from coaches in the past and advanced payment or deposit is standard practice.
They get the deposit and start the preparation. Go thru your games, identify weaknesses and opportunities, monitoring your progress and some will watch your games live all off the clock for free.
$150 for 10 hours from a titled coach is a steal of a deal.
