I'm sort of a beginner myself but after a glance at your profile I'd suggest avoiding fast paced games if you're at a stage where you're just trying to learn the basics.

If you know basic stuff like what each piece is worth, how each piece moves, openings, some basic principles, then you move onto taking your time to observe the board and how to put that into practice.

I personally know a lot of the basics, I'm not bad for a beginner but as soon as I go on any fast paced games I get thrashed, plus I feel like I've learned nothing at the end of it. The only thing I learn is that I make stupid obvious mistakes when I try and play fast.

Tactics, tactics, tactics. Tactics in the opening, tactics in the middle game. And...guess what...tactics in the endgame ;)

I just bought some chess books. They've helped a lot in the past

I can teach you EXACTLY how to think during the game (opening, middlegame and endgame). Your chess understanding will never be the same and you will improve a lot. I charge €10/h, but if you can’t afford too many lessons, don’t worry. I can teach you a lot in an hour. Here to help if you are interested.

If you want to study by yourself, read ‘Logical Chess’. It is really instructive book. You have it on youtube as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eTB7oHeRgM&list=PLUrgfsyInqNa1S4i8DsGJwzx1Uhn2AqlT
