I subscribed for Platinum but I don’t feel like I’m making enough progress. It’s a month now. How can I get better

I looked at your ongoing daily game and I have some suggestions for future games.

Given that you haven't studied the Scotch opening, don't play it. Honestly there are tons of openings you can play without studying but only amateurs play it without knowing the principles behind it. Given that you want to improve beyond that level, no more Scotch.

2. I liked moves one and two. Better options for your third move are 3. Bc5 (the Italian Game) 3. Bb6 (the Ruy Lopez). There are others but it's clear you want to be an aggressive player and these are solid aggressive openings.

3. I'm assuming you probably just move what feels right. Top level players can do that and make fantastic moves. They couldn't when they were at your level. You need to slow way, way, way, way, wayyy down.

Do you have an exhaustive checklist of principles with a hierarchy of importance that you go through for every move you make? Would you like one? I'll post a link at the bottom.

I'm guessing you're familiar with opening principles. Did you know that of the three parts that you need to consider for an opening, the opening principles are the least important part?

Getting a platinum membership is cool but if you don't put in the time (years), if you don't put in the work (at least most days), and you aren't objective about the mistakes you're making (we all make mistakes. Being honest with ourselves is hard) if you ever do see improvements they will be very small and very slow.

I know some of the points I've made have been harsh (and we didn't even get past the opening which is the least important part of the game) but the truth is you have a really long way to go. The good news is that just means you have lots of opportunities for growth. You can't just spend a few bucks a month and expect everything to magically change.

If you're serious about wanting to improve and you're determined to do whatever it takes, send me a message.

Otherwise here are some free resources that I think you could really benefit from.

I really would like to see you grow into your potential.

Muhammad Ali once said, "Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision. Champions have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill."

Let this be the moment you light a fire within yourself. And from this day forward, never let that fire burn out. It's you vs. you. You're the only one who can determine how far you go!

Here's that hierarchy of rules I was talking about:

P.S. my blog is pretty basic right now because it's designed for beginners.

However, I'm in the top 1% of all chess.com members.

I'm confident we can get your game up at least a few notches in no time if you're serious.
