Everyone here is self taught. What have you been doing to teach yourself?

I have studied some openings. I play queen's gambit with white and sicilian drag variation/ slav (depending on white's 1st move) with black. I am fairly solid at these openings. I am better when I play with defensive mind set(wait for opponent to make mistake, lay traps and try not to make big mistakes), not really good at attacking plans. I actually don't know how to attack and this is where I need to learn. I don't understand what to study really. People suggest to do a lot of tactics, but whats the point of memorizing. I think best way to learn is play against a high rated player while that player points out mistakes and inaccuracies during the game. That's kinda how I teach my friends and colleagues.
