on trying 7.Qf3 the mentor says "A bit crude, and Black has 7...Ne5!, forking queen and bishop while defending f7." while 7...Ne5?? is obviously losing to 8.Qxd5.

What's the name of the course mate?  I'm not smart enough to figure it out from just STU008. Embarassed

First Chess Openings for White by Eric Schiller

Yes, it's an apparent error. It should rather be 7...Be6, with unclear consequences. Not that unusual for the aforementioned author.

I did find one instance of 7...Ne5 in a database but it's obviously not real popular.  I think Schiller was just trying to teach the Lolli according to beginner opening principles and castling on move 7 is more in line with a near beginner course.

I assume the move is not popular because it's just a blunder. Tongue Out

Don't get me wrong though - I'm not saying that 7.O-O isn't the better move compared to 7.Qf3 Be6. I just wanted to point out that the mentor's "refutation" 7...Ne5 gets white a winnig position rather than black.

I guess I'm just not as convinced as you are that white gets a winning position.  Obviously in the game that I gave you a link to (365chess.com), black won although that proves nothing.  Anyway out of morbid curiosity I have Houdini chewing away at it, although on my "crapbox from the mall", analysis takes awhile.  If I come up with something I'll let you know.

7...Ne5 is an idiot's move, and you don't need Houdini to confirm it.

Um... Houdini? Maybe we can handle this ourselves...

*in my notes I give 7....Qe7+ as a good response to 7.Qf3 and although it isn't bad -- 7...Be6 it seems is better.

jeez, all I wanted was to report an obvious error - but you guys manage to make a giant thread out of everything, right? LaughingLaughingTongue Out

Well, it is Saturday after all and it's too early in the day to start drinking so what else to while away our time?  Yeah despite black winning the only game I could find I have to agree that white is better.  I got tired of Houdini hogging my computer but it had white  from +2 to +2.5 after an hour or so.

Am I right in thinking that there is no official way to report errors in Chess Mentor?

Anyone tried messaging the Authors directly?
