Chess is Siege Warfare in game form.  the 3 strategies  of Siege Warfare are:

1. Restrain the enemy

2. Blockade the enemy

3. Execute the enemy

Study "My System", by Aaron Nimzowitsch.  It will shine a floodlight on the answer to your strategy questions.  Almost every strong player has read My System, or books based on his ideas.
