I mostly play well too, but I badly misplay the opening, the middlegame and the endgame at times.

Unfortunately nobody ever cared to teach me (what for- they have better things to do), so I learned on my own. No secrets, just work... hard work.

I agree with Pfren. Lots of play is good but really, study is important as I'm finding out. Some of the work just can't be skipped. One time when I was young (and stupid) I lost my driver's license for a while and stayed in and with nothing else to do I read Keres and Kotov's book The Art of the Middlegame. I played through all the positions and lessons they had in the book. Amazingly, my rating went up by 150 points after I read that book. It's one of the classics I recommend, although pfren may have other books he'd recommend and actually I'd listen to anything he has to say.

at your level, i'd recommend getting into nimzo's "my system".  it's a great book with a wide variety of information, from beginner all the way up to very strong.
