Trouble seeing even one move ahead

I've never been good, and haven't even played Chess in over 35 years. These last few weeks, I've been trying to get back into it. I'm trying to do the online lessons, and even then, am failing miserably. I just can't see what the computer is trying to teach me. For instance, there was a less where I was to move the Queen to a certain space. I just couldn't see it, at all. And even when I took the hint, it made absolutely NO sense to me, because what would keep the other player from simply taking my Queen with their pawn? What I missed was, I had a Rook that had the pawn pinned. How do I learn to see this stuff? The lessons aren't helping, because I can't ask even basic questions like this.

You just have to keep hammering away at it.  One thing some find helpful is to break the game down into smaller elements.  Have you tried the Drills yet?  Play>Computer>New Game>Drills.  There are programs like Chess King with hundreds more.  And of course I like my Diamond because I can do as many lessons as I want; useful when I'm reviewing tactics lessons on the various motifs.  If I'm having trouble seeing the board, a nice confidence booster is to knock out 30 or 40 forks or pins or back rank mates or whatever.  Good luck!
