Clarissa Yip

Okay, so I'm pretty new to chess as far as paying any attention to what's going on in the upper levels of the game.  So, I really have not much reference here, but...

Is IM Clarissa Yip trouncing 7 WGMs for the Women's US Chess Championship as big a deal as I think it is?  Seems quite impressive.

It occurred to me that perhaps the last 1.5-ish years of few/no OTB tournaments probably means there's some "backlog" of IMs (and FMs, NMs, etc) who are probably well improved "above their title" but just haven't had much recent opportunity for norms until now?

Regardless, I think I'm a "Yip Fan" either way.

It’s a big deal any time you can win five games in a row and beat four former champions.

She also had a tournament performance rating of 2514, which is GM strength. That’s pretty impressive for an 18 year old.
