I think you are wrong. I know two common ways that doctors diagnose gender dysphoria, one is doing brain imaging, because despite some antiscientific propaganda men and females have different brains. The structure is the same but the proportions are different, there are a few parts that men have bigger in the brain and just a bigger brain generally, and women have only one part of the brain bigger than men which is the corpus callosum, the commissure of the cerebral hemispheres. The second most common test that I am aware of for gender dysphoria is checking hormone levels in the blood, this is the way they classify men vs females at the olympics afaik, and it can get you disqualified for doing some testosterone-boosting steroids because women on such steroids can beat all the other women almost like a man can, and doing transitioning in sports is almost exactly the same just in the other way, men can transition and lower his testosterone but his body and brain were already built with a very high level of this hormones, so he can pass blood tests but it is still not fair and he will have big upper-hand against women, this is why it shouldn't be respected or even considered.
FIDE Transgender Policies

What I think is interesting is that it's 2023. Men have landed on the moon. Computers are everywhere. Technology is increasing at rate probably faster than at any time in human history. Knowledge is everywhere and easily accessible.
And some people are just now realizing that men and women are different. They have different physical qualities, different mental qualities, different chemical and biological compositions. And yet a primitive caveman from 10,000 years ago could have told the modern day confused person this.

And some people are just now realizing that men and women are different. They have different physical qualities, different mental qualities, different chemical and biological compositions.
Depends on the woman.

I suppose. She was in the series "Y-the last man". A story about how all mammals with a Y chromosome all died off, except one man. Trans "men", however, survived because they did not have a Y chromosome.

Then there is the question of whether chess should be separated by gender in the first place. If you accept that it should, I think the original FIDE ruling should make perfect sense.
FYI... I believe the comment you're referring to is from @darkunorthodox88. I do not agree with their comments. I'm not aware of any FIDE presentation or article that supports the claims made.
The FIDE presentation regarding gender gaps in chess... "participation explains most, but not all, of the performance gap" and there is "some evidence biological factors affect the gap, but we don’t know exactly what, or how much". I believe this is aligned with the study I shared regarding women in STEM.
I support FIDE recognizing gender identities of players. Perhaps it's reasonable that they recognize the gender markers on the players identification to avoid abuse. My concern is that some countries do not allow such changes and I hope FIDE could allow for exceptions in those cases.
It seems you disagree with the original gender separation, rather than the ruling relating to transgender people.

And via MRI studies we now know brains of trans women are more similar to cis women than they are to cis men. Vice versa with trans men.
Sure yadda yadda primitive cavemen, but how much could they say about the causes of autism, or ADHD, or homosexuality, or all sorts of other things that happen in the brain?
.
I am not "confused". I was, but not anymore. I don't really get why I am this way (those brain studies notwithstanding), but I get that when I have a female self-image, I'm comfortable with myself. When I didn't, I was not (it's called gender dysphoria) - I had a deep seated mental wrongness that I initially didn't understand and never could permanently banish till I started transitioning. It's not a fetish or kink, it's not self-hate, it's not some weird shame or misogyny or masochism, it's sure as hell not because I want to stare at or assault (other) women in bathrooms and locker rooms. And also possibly the dumbest reason, it isn't because I want to win women's chess tournaments or farm elo. Unfortunately it's also impossible to get cis people to viscerally understand; there's no metaphor that helps any cis man go "oh, that's why you want to do things to your body that make me cringe in horror".
.
I don't want any (cis) men cheating by pretending to be (trans) women either. But blanket banning trans women from women's competitions is not a reasonable compromise, nor is "trans leagues" that typically won't have enough people in them to have decent competitions.
.
Remember when there was going to be huge problems giving women the vote and other equal rights? Remember when allowing blacks to integrate with whites (instead of being 'separate but equal') was unthinkable? Remember when allowing gay people to marry was going to end the family unit as we knew it? I am only old enough to remember the last one, myself. But treating trans women as women and trans men as men is just the latest bit of sorting things out in the progress of human rights that those cavemen started way back when and I hope to still be around when it's as settled as gay marriage is nowadays.

You talk so much sense, I wish more people here would try and understand what you are saying rather than knee-jerk arguing with you.

The is not what I said. Specifically, I said:

There are gaps in women's participation and performance in chess (compared to men). I cited an article on FIDE website that states "participation explains most, but not all, of the performance gap". I don't believe men are inherently better at chess. Rather... women are systemically disadvantaged. The same FIDE article also elaborated on those disadvantages. The other article I referencedoutlines similar issues with women in STEM.

Or maybe we judge based on performance and not gender. If you play and win you get a point. If you lose you get zero. If you draw you get .5 points.
We then tally those numbers up and divide into 2 groups (or even more). Let the chips fall where they may. You have one group and you have a second group. There is no women's group, there is no open group (in the existing sense). There are two open groups based on performance.
The problem might be, [Moderator removed derogatory term for an individual] don't want to see themselves get outperformed. Smarter minds need to prevail and allow transgender people to perform in both areas. It doesn't have to be a two party fat sumo wrestler Democrat vs. Republican war. It doesn't have to be either women's or open. We can even divide this into three groups (with super GMs after say 2700~).

Sorry in advance for breaking your vision of the colorful happy world, but we still do legal race segregation, ie in penitentiaries in the USA, and gay marriages are fully respected only in a few Western countries.
My dim prediction is that it will end up very badly for all those people who believe that the world has changed forever and it is all magically different now, Berlin before WWII was a very liberal place too. Political winds in this world are like a pendulum, so when it's stretched on one side, it will soon bounce back to the opposite with the same force, currently, liberals are constantly provoking the 99% of gun owners in America, and Western European countries are trying to eradicate the catholic church yet they welcome radical Islam, so that pendulum has already started to bounce back, duh, and it will be all the same again, your idealistic optimism is absolutely misplaced.
Also, remember that you are just one of the 15% of people living in the first world, and something around 50% of the rest hate us all, with issues like no food no shelter, and no water, they don't give a damn about some trans rights, so you are not the ambassador of humanity.
If you really want to do something good for minorities, don't play with the pendulum.

I'm a trans woman and I just registered for the ECF (English Chess Federation) as a female player. We are women, and so we play in women's categories. It's simple.

... Western European countries are trying to eradicate the catholic church yet they welcome radical Islam
This is not true.
Progress in the "first world" is only in one direction: greater respect for individuals and their right to be who they want to be.

When my son was in grade school the teachers had to respect the students wishes and their "right to be who they want to be". He thought it was ridiculous so he made an example out of the teachers nonsense. He identified as an Apache attack helicopter. He said he was fast, he could fight, and he always wanted to fly. So he demanded they recognize how he identifies.
And of course, being the lemmings they are, the teacher did exactly that. The teacher had to respect his wishes. All the kids laughed at the teacher so hard and she was so embarrassed she probably suffered some emotional issue. But for the kids the solution was simple. Don't do something stupid and you won't be laughed at.
I'll take 'things that didn't happen' for 500, please

You can bet everything you have if you like. You may not be aware of what's going on in schools these days. And I didn't even mention what the boys did when they found out women's hygiene products were placed in the boys bathroom. If you've ever been around teenage boys, you don't have to wonder too much.
Consider that a daily double.

As a trans woman, I am unfortunately aware of the transphobia and homophobia in schools, and how uneducated cis people can be
RACISM!??! Are you saying straight people are uneducated?!?!?!?!

I think you may have been misled. Nobody is scared of either persuasion. It's just that when you get a large group of teenage boys, you intentionally subject them to things like women's hygiene products in boys bathrooms, you have to expect a certain predictable result.
No different than when, during class, a student "identifies" as a cat. Or anything else that they clearly are not. Including Apache attack helicopters. There is going to be a very predictable amount of backlash, ridicule, and disruption. Bringing this unwarranted disruption to the attention of the staff, and making an example out of it, is perfectly within the rights of the students.
