Afterwards, I went to see the standings and results at the Chess.com overview of the tournament, and to my big surprise, I noticed a team called “Le Zion Chess Club”, with all Israeli participants.
Sometimes sports ís political, especially when a team decides to call themselves “Le Zion chess club”, obviously pointing to the Zionist culture in Israel. Zionism, the ideology that wants a Jewish state in the land of Palestine, with as many Jews as possible, at the costs of as many Palestinians.
As a European Jew myself, I am horrified by the happenings in Palestine, Gaza, and the atrocity that is done by Israelis there. There has just been too much war footage, but also social-political footage by Israeli’s themselves, to keep denying a genocide. It ís a genocide, it’s racism, it’s a geo-political issue.
My question is: should the tournament allow such team to exist, for two reasons:
1) the name is provoking. Zionism should not be advocated for in Chess.
2) Should the Israeli flag still be allowed, as Russian flag is also banned. The hypocrisy is too much to handle.
With all respect to Jews and Israeli’s who want this horror to end, but the Chess community should do better than to allow Zionist propaganda in international tournaments.
