1. a4? Why?
1.a4 is probably not that terrible a move. If White gets to adopt a reasonable formation, with b3, Bb2, e3, Nf3, Be2 & 0-0 (s)he may be okay. Yes the pawn on a4 is somewhat out of place, but otherwise White's position is quite solid. If you have access to databases, you'll find that every possible first move has been played on at least one occasion.
