1.d4 is boring

I find d4 "boring"

Chuck639

I’m not a fan of d4 either but my younger brother and friends play so I’ll refrain from saying anything I’ll regret.

Do not get me started on the London System.

In general I’m not a fan of playing into my opponents preparation so I have a few defences or transpositions that I rotate with depending on my opponents strengths, weaknesses, my mood, time controls and tournament situations.

Really, I’m just looking to equalize the opening and get into a playable or enjoyable middle game.

ChophelChess

some people find longer time controls "boring".....just saying...

Play f5, the dutch , it's the only way to have a fun position with blacks but white knows methods to avoid complications anyway

Chan_Fry

Something like 30% of all games begin with 1.d4 (I checked the database on [the other site].) So... get used to it, I guess.

ya face is boring

d4 is meant for beginners and along the way, they will find their own beginning move that they will like using.

( Me for example)

Seriously though, how so? The only boring opening I can think of off the top of my head is the London. I would say e4 is more boring, though maybe that’s my d4 bias talking. The Italian makes me want to just fall asleep, and the Spanish isn’t much better (unless you deviate from the mainline). If we’re talking gambits, d4 has those!

-BDG gambit

-Budapest

-Benko

-Queen’s Gambit (maybe more traditional but it has some fun lines if you don’t enter a semi-slav or close the center)

I played a tournament game recently and was hoping to get the Grunfeld but end transposing to my opponents symmetric prep which sucked for me and was boring for the most part.

This thread has me revisiting my QID and Modern-Pterodactyl side lines again as I like the imbalance and counter play.

brianchesscake

in general, 1.d4 leads to "safer" and tactically less complex positions than 1.e4, but there can still be a lot of positional battles and subtle ideas to make it interesting. (also, some d4 lines are quite tactical like the Grunfeld and KID, for example).

so, while you probably won't get mated in 15 moves playing 1.d4, you can just as easily suffer the pain of playing with a long term disadvantage that is a lot harder to get rid of using tactics compared to most e4 openings.

The problem is usually boring players, not boring openings

"1 d4: dull & drawish" - Fischer
"I have never opened with the queen's pawn, on principle" - Fischer

Great player, stupid principle

This just tells me you're afraid of it and too lazy to study a decent response. White can choose any opening move and d4 is one of the good ones.

It's been around forever. I recall the old duffers at the chess club I went to about 1980 played it. Now there is a whole theory of lame openings that have been spruced up by GMs who, really, should know better. Shame on them!

I know what you mean. I play 3. Bc4 all the time but I'll be damned if I'll follow up with d3! I mean, why bother!?! If I wanted to squiggle around in a positional mess, I'd play the Ruy.

Pablum is boring.  Steak is better.

If you want to get a good night's sleep, look at the boring 1.d4 games played by Marshall, Alekhine, Kasparov, Shirov, Spassky, Keres, Stein, and Anand. What a snoozefest

Yeah, I always play d4 in the Italian (after c3 obviously)

Try playing c3 after b4, then you get to play d4 without their knight on f6 yet grin.png

No it's not
