LOVED IT!
Thanks for the input.. who has some cool gambits and traps starting w/ 1. d4 ??
Completely unsound - but it's worked a lot for me on the black side of the board in blitz (when the opponent can't think) - is the Englund gambit. Got 9 or 10 quite amusing 7 move mates with this exact line - against good players too.
I transpose into various queenside-oriented systems with:
For example:
1. g3 d5
2. Bg2 e5
3. c4
etc.
I also like playing 1. d4, and if 1. ...d5, then Nf3 and Bf4 (The London system)
If you like playing with a safe space advantage, 1.d4 has a lot going for it.
Although in the game that started the thread, after 1.d4 Nf6 White should have played 2.c4. White shouldn't block his c4 pawn after 1.d4, it is needed to attack Black's d5 pawn. White should play 2.c4 against almost all of Black's defences.
My ability to memorize reams of theory, their motifs, and ideas at a glance leads me to loving both. Yet, when the chips are down I stray towards 1.e4, as that was the first thing given to me. The Queen's Pawn, English, and other openings stray in to games with less on the line, and I still love the positions they can produce!
What are the ideas behind the London system? Is it just a setup or does it include a plan?
I would think to castle long and storm the kingside with pawns, when possible.
8...Bd7 is awful by black. That piece belongs on g4 if it can get there, so 8...Re8 followed by 9...e5 looked for called for. Black's bishop could also find a nice home on e6, but again it would require the e-pawn advance so 8...Re8 would still make sense. 9...Qc7 was bad as well -- she belongs on e7 to support ...e5 (with some preparation, of course).

wow, still getting comments on this!
this was my first forum posting on this sight back in 2008
so now i play 1. c4 almost all the time, i would like to learn more about 1.d4 for sure for transpositional purposes. i find myself straying away from 1.e4 these days for a while there i was trying to get into the Ponziani with it (if yuo dont know this one yuotube it, its cool)
as far as the game goes that i started the thread with, i would never play that as an opening now but the checkmate is cool.. funny to look back on your games from a year or two a go and see how far you've come
I hate playing against d4 and NEVER open with it
same here :) I recognize it's a great opening move, but I hate it b/c im so not used to it O_o
