Is there any special name for this line in the scandinavian defense? I play this very often against 1.e4 but I don't know the name of what i am playing here.
This would be my favorite because of the simplistic idea of giving up a pawn to get 2 pieces out before white has any pieces out at all. (I am completely aware that white does not HAVE to play this, it just seems to come up fairly often.)

not sure about the name, but its definatelly a very popular opening in the 1800 - 2000 levels,
White easily gets a good position
Play d5 in response to your opponents' e4 and see what setups they implement! :)

That's the Icelandic Gambit. Theory seems to go back and forth on it, but right now, I believe it is considered to be in pretty good shape.
You're right, in that the problem (again from a top-level theoretical standpoint), is that white is under no compulsion to play 3.c4.
Against 3.Nf3, I think black has trouble getting anything. And against 3.d4, I think black is considered to be in pretty bad shape...at least in the 3...Bg4 lines that make up the Portuguese...the usual companion to the Icelandic in club-level repertoires. Indeed, 3.d4 is why the Nf6 Scandi has all but disappeared from top level chess.
The scandi has never impressed me at all. I also do not understand why people as white play 3.Nc3 instead of 3.Nf3. The latter is just as popular in my database and imo it gives white more central control because he can push d4 AND c4 because he hasnt blocked the c pawn. Who cares if you chase away the queen on move 3? She is going to have to move anyway with loss of tempo in the 3.Nf3 line aswell.
White has lost a tempo with e4xd5. And will win it again when Black has to move Qd5-Qa5. So finally there is no such thing as a lost of a tempo for Black.
I never said anything about white being up a tempo in the opening as a total, that is a different matter. It is irrelevant what has happend before you gain a tempo on the queen because when you make a move, c4 or Nc3 that gains a tempo on the queen it still gains a tempo on the queen. Nothing that has happend before in the opening changes that fact. And to my point it is irrelevant what has happend before in the opening because I was talking about is the fact that white does not lose the tempo gain on the queen if he doesn't play Nc3 because he will play c4 at some point instead. That means white will not be worse off tempo wise if he plays 3.Nf3 compared to 3.Nc3.
well i agree with atahan about the 'sooner or later' idea of gaining a tempo on the queen...I play 3. d4 rather than 3 Nf3, however....but i often transpose from that line into the position he gave.
the thing you have to consider, however, is whether or not black can jump on the opportunity of his temporary nice place for the queen to do anything annoying. The main thing to consider would be 3...e5. Now i believe that a fast e5 doesnt turn out so great for black in the 3. d4 line, but im not sure about this 3. nf3 line
I think a transposition to a favorable 3.Nf3 line is the answer:
