Alternatives to Chess Position Trainer?

Sort:
OldSchoolB

I am looking for an alternative to Chess Position Trainer because it has some major glitches and it seems that they have discontinued support. Otherwise it was perfect for me. Does anyone know of an alternative programs out there that would allow me to:

- Create my own opening repertoire

- Train with spaced repetition

Note that I am doing this because I greatly enjoy it, not because it's the best way to improve my chess (it isn't).

I have tried the Openings Trainer on chesstempo, but it lacks many of the features of Chess Position Trainer.

Thanks!

I just bought the CPT myself but feel a bit angry that although the website makes you believe that there is support, there is, in fact, no support.  The program has not been updated for a long time and has still an older version of Stockfish as an engine.  However, I do like the program's features.  It is also possible to update the engine to the latest version.

If you use an Android phone or tablet, then there are two Apps I know off that do almost the same as CPT.  Chess Repertoire Manager and Chess Repertoire Trainer.

I recommend the Pro version of CRT.  You can import/export pgn files between all programs.  However, when you import from CRT to CPT you may have to manually tick the boxes at every branch split.

Actually, it turns out that CPT does still have support, just not through the ticket system on the website. You need to email directly support@chesspositiontrainer.com.

It turns out that Stefan at CPT is putting his energy into a version 6.0, which should resolve the issues I have. The biggest problem is lack of user control over the spaced repetition intervals, ideally there will be a high level of control but at a minimum there needs to be an option to set a maximum interval. So I'm back to fully recommending CPT, assuming v. 6.0 comes out some day and has user control over spaced repetition-- with this it will be a great program.

I love CPT, I've not had concerns about the spaced repetition. I do use the option to train from a position to help me learn a specific line faster, I hope that helps. I do wish that they had a 64 bit version, the 32 bit version is super slow even when using a powerful processor, and an SSD/NVME drive sad.png.

I use CPT and I have contacted them with questions and always gotten answers. And you can use the settings to select the engine. I’m using Stockfish 10

But I would sure be interested in a new version

Has anyone has any news about upcoming CPT 6? It has been very quiet for some time now. I like CPT, there is no other chess software better for building a repertoire. But a lot of things can be improved. CPT becomes unstable if handling very big repertoire files. I also like Lucas Chess. It has an option to import best moves from a bin book to a repertoire. It would be nice if this was possible in CPT to.

@Ladyhawke79 I had a chance to chat with the creator of the program, and he said it's coming. I didn't get specifics about when. But, it's coming. One thing I asked him about is an X64 version of it. 32bit is too slow for my taste.

@luisnux how long ago was this?

Like 1-2 months ago...maybe less.

1. Chess Opening Wizards.
2. Chessable.
3. Chess Tempo.

I second this post. There is no need for further discussion on this.

Have you tried chessable?

A web based version or being able to save your repertoire in the cloud would be nice

Douse anyone know how I can mark all candidate moves as 'best moves' in CPT?
I mean in one go, without having to check the boxes manually.

18 months later and nothing has happened?

I asked Stefan Renzewitz by mail if he had any news about an upcoming update some month ago. He's answer was unfortunately not.

@ladyhawke79 sigh. I won't buy another copy until they have an X64 version or something faster. It's so slow even when installed on a powerful computer with the latest hardware.
