An Interesting Idea in the Sicilian Dragon

I tried this idea at my chess club today. I know it's not mainline, and I can't find any games where it was played, so can someone tell me why it's bad?

The move in question is 7...Qb6.

Comment at move 11 should be "...giving white many opportunites..."

Weird dragon.  Black's ...Nf6 is missing.

Did anyone consider 8.Nd5 - that move literally jumps out.

We looked at it a little bit. Black seemed to be fine--I sac'ed the exchange and beat different people. Did we miss something?

8. Nxc6 seems to win a piece black can't recapture without losing the queen

nevermind Qxb2 looks interesting after that...

8.Nxc6 was the first thing someone tried to play against me, but I think Qxd2 is overpowering. If I don't want complications I could still play 8...Qxc6 and when he moves the bishop I can take the pawn on c3 if I want it.

Indirect

Okay, if black doesn't play Nf6, then white will almost always play for a Maroczy Bing Setup._.

9.Bd2 is weak.  I thought that 9.b4 would be working for White but apparently not.

Houdini likes (after 8.Nd5 Qa5+) 9.c3 solidifying d4 instead.  Implying there is no tactical refutation, but White is somewhat better.  (Letting it run for a while it settles on 9...e6 at +0.27)

Yes, I recall finding the "refutation" of 9.b4, but I don't remember what it was right now.

After 9.c3, what happens if 9...e6 (oh, I see that's what the computer wanted) 10.Nf4 (or would it try 10.b4 now?) and then something like 10...Qf5?

No, White simply swaps on c6 and plays Nb4, keeping up the pressure on c6 - should be good for a small advantage:

Well, I've definately played many games like this in blitz. I guess some people just prefer not to play a Maroczy? But at the very worst, white is just slightly better, right? So it definately has merit as a surprise blitz opening?

prefen--on the line you posted, after 11.Kd2, why not 11...e5?

Your idea works best against 6. or 7.Bc4, maybe += but not more.

If white is not afraid of the Dragon Rauzer (Yugoslav) main lines he can play 6.Be3 and 7.f3 which prevents your idea. But even there variations are complex (I looked at it with Stockfish DD), so on your playing level you can try it there too.

You have to be prepared to play against the Maroczy setup (5.c4).
