we should all gravitate towards Fischer random now i guess
Any good weapons against the french?

You can play your own moves, and play theory (or better than theory).
Certainly.
I've played theory-heavy rated match games, including one where the first departure from theory... the first new move... was played on move 28.
I've also played a rated match game where I tried out a piece sacrifice ON MOVE 8 that I had never seen or heard of before... it was an on-the-spot inspiration.
This one:
its allways fun to be 25 moves into the Bg5 najdorf or 23 moves into the kings indian

“And yes, I think that a competent player (in any game) can almost always do better than the theory”
Samuel get over here now plssss
Where’s Samuel when you need him 😞

The move 28 thing doesn’t change the fact that you can play better than theory. Also cool piece sac fr

alright buddy let’s play a game sometime in the depths of the evans gambit or Sveshnikov Sicilian and we’ll see who’s pressing for a win after a bit. Then you can tell me that you don’t need theory.

A purely textbook boxer would be a weak one.
And back to the prep vs competence thing.
What's better, learning how to play basketball with a crutch and while obese, and how to win games as that, OR letting your ankle heal, losing weight and being able to run / turn and breathe, then playing the same sport with a better and more able body?
The latter is going to take that player much further.
How is that relevant to theory?

One point to bear in mind, though...
It isn't a question of either 100% theory / 0% competence vs 0% theory / 100% competence. That's a false dichotomy that will NEVER be realized in the real world.
Study and competence are synergistic... they REACT on each other, with an increased understanding (not memorization, understanding) of theory boosting your general competence, while each increase in general competence increases your ability to understand WHY these moves are favored over THOSE moves.

Yes

Sure I’m fine with a regular game as well. And theory definitely will help me.
Challenge me to 5 14 day rateds.
I’m not playing a daily game that will take ages

I go to a boarding school where I board weekly. Depending on how fast you are the game could potentially take months

Bro that's going to take forever....play 5 10+5sec rapid
I'm not your bro.
Hey sis, wanna play an unrated rapid game? Slay!
