f4 isn't a bad move. You can get some good Dutch setups from it. Also f4 prevents the E pawns best develop.

I am finding it very interesting, and in short games slipping from Bird into Leningrad can even lead beginner players to quit if their attack fails.

A friend, far better at chess, does not like it because you can get checkmated if you are not careful.

I see. It does open your king a little, so we  should be a little careful.

you can get checkmated if you're not careful in the mainline king's indian defense as well.

I mean, you can get checkmated in any opening if you are not careful.
