Check out ......Nd4,it's called the Birds defence and works quite well for not many Ruy Lopez fans seem to know of it's existance,if you want we can try it out in a game?
Anyone know an exploit for B5 in the Ruy Lopez?
Thats not an answer thegab.
Looking for a refutation whenever your opponent makes an unusual move isn't always a good idea. In the case of the caro variation, there is no actual refutation that secures +/= for white! Instead, b5 is just a stupidly inflexable move, why doesn't black leave it for later? My preferance is to play an eventual a4 in those lines, playing at releasing the rook.

I'll assume you mean Bc4 not Bb4. First make sure you are ready for the proper Black responses, Nf6 seems most likely, maybe Bc5. After that you've a limited number of choices. Both Bb3 and Bd5 should work. The later looks like an attempt to get tactical and a little out of character for the Ruy here. The former seems more inline with the dictates of the opening, maintaining the Bishop pair, long term pressure etc. Of course if Black follows up with Na5 you might want to have fun with Bxf7+ and take a walk on the wild side!
After Bb5 black often responds with A6. I play Bb4 and about 40-50% of opponants have been playing back with B5.
I read in an essay that this is a bad move and seldomly made by good players. Unfortunately, the essay didn't explain the lines which make this a bad move.
Does anyone know of an exploit for B5 from black?
Cheers
