Is this your own test? I find it also very effective, but I doubt that anyone will ever be able to conclude this.

I don't know about best, but it's clearly the move that the best players in the world have the most faith in, when the stakes are highest.
I rather imagine that if Bobby Fischer were ascending today, he'd make the same declaration about d4 that he once famously did about that other move. He wasn't, after all, saying that he had proven e4 was the best. He was saying that it had been proven so (to his satisfaction) over the history of the world's greatest chess matches. That pendulum has swung.
