Best defense against d4

Hi, I am a french defense player against e4 and I play the reti as white because I like active and tactical positions. Do you have any suggestions for what I should play as black against d4,c4,Nf3 (ideally starting with the move e6).

Queen's Gambit Declined.

Say no more.

Option A) Use 1.e6 to avoid trompowsky and transpose into nimzo indian with 2.Nf6(potentially boring)

Option B) Queen's gambit declined(not boring), I recommend this variation in the orthodox

Option C) THEE GOAAAAT, TARRRAAAAASH DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll just show you what you can potentially do there
this is what we can do with the c pawn, now the d pawn

Option D) Goated Dutch defence

Option E) English defence
they all work against the londons too

I would either recommend the Tarrasch Defense or the Semi-Slav.

Hi!

Since you play 1. e4, e6, I think you could play the English Defense if you like dynamic play: 1. d4, e6 2. c4, b6 3. Nc3, Bb7. Then you could premove 1...e6 always.

Good luck!

As one that has played the French Defense for over a quarter of a century, there are 2 good options. One involves 1...e6. The other doesn't.

The one with 1...e6 - Dutch Defense - 1.d4 e6 2.c4 f5 and your next move will be 3...Nf6, then it depends on White.

A) If White plays g3 either on move 3 or 4, take your pick between the Classical and Stonewall - strictly personal preference - both are fine - I play the Stonewall.

B) If moves 3 and 4 involve Nc3 and Nf3, then 4...Bb4!

C) Anything else (3.Nc3/4.e3 or London), play 4...b6 and 5...Bb7

Second Option, which does involve 1...Nf6, is the Kings Indian Defense. It is extremely similar to the French in that it is all about blocked center strategy. You attack the side where your pawns point. In the French, that is Kingside for White and Queenside for Black. In the Classical King's Indian, that is Queenside for White and Kingside for Black.

The French and King's Indian is a VERY COMMON combination for GMs that played the French. See Uhlmann, Petrosian, Glen, etc. The one notable exception was Korchnoi, who played the Grunfeld early in his career and Nimzo-Indian later.

I have gone back and forth myself between KID and Dutch.

the Tarrasch defense would be a good choice.

One advantage of 1...e6 is that White could respond with 2. e5. Which you wouldn't think a d4 player would do, but it happens to me a surprising number of times.

Actually, against 1...e6, there are many reasons to play 2.e4. When I was a 1.d4 player, I did exactly that.

Reasons why a d4 player may answer 1...e6 with 2.e4.

1) They flat out know the French, but play 1.d4 to avoid other KP Openings, like the Sicilian.

2) Against the Dutch, they play the Staunton Gambit, Poisoned Spike Gambit, or 2.Bg5, and are looking to avoid the Deferred Dutch (2...f5)

3) To avoid the English Defense. By playing 2.e4, if 2...b6, you are now in Owen's Defense, which is weaker than the English Defense.

If you REALLY want open and tactical as much as me, especially if you despise closed positions and fianchettos as much as me, take the englund gambit hartlaub charlick variation for a test drive. I LOVE IT!!! take my 2 center pawns! I hate pawns! They were only IN MY WAY anyways.

It has simple plans most players are happy to go along with, more mobility than KINGS GAMBIT, and time to regroup on a new target when an opponent defends against plan A.

GM parrots lose their minds hating on it, but as far as i know, my stats are still 2:1 with it, but that's not why i love it. I love it because I no longer have to play the quiet positional game 1.d4 players want me to in the stonewall straightjacket, but force them to try and defend against open field berserker attacks THEY don't want any part of

A well prepared opponent CAN get an advantage, but when i looked at my stats in the line everyone was calling the "refutation", my stats were 6-8 wins in 10 games!

it's not for everyone, but is the ONLY game in town for me when every other suggested line for tactician involves fianchettos which are NOT my kind of tactics or some degree of closed. Original Dutch just might be as tactical as its reputation, but as I despise the stonewall so much, I'm not interested and you couldn't pay me to lenningrad... what Part of I hate fianchettos did I stutter about?

It's very easy to learn just replaying the lines in chess academy's video. If you really ARE a fellow out in the open fightin' klingon, it's EXACTLY what you're asking for. As a BONUS, if your opponent declines with 2.c4, play 2...d5!? and you got the albin counter gambit!

despite its slightly losing stats, THATs what i wanted to play for over a decade, but refused to because ITs sidelines require fianchettos like the benko and benoni which im not interested in at all. Play the hartlaub charlick, and the albin becomes a bonus sideline and you have another super tactical fun fun line.

Sidelines are a pain, but they're just that, and doing your homework there fixes much of that.

It was literally love at first site for ME when i saw both bishops lined up on 0-0, all the tactics, the wide open center, comfortable basic development and even bishop sacking "can opener attacks" as i like to call them.

I trust GRANDMASTER (*cough cough cough* haters!) assessment of the pressure it applies and difficulties it causes development in the main line, and my own experience bears it out even if i don't speak positional.

Easy to learn, test drive it in casual, and then if you're getting it, start scooping ratings points up frustrating pawn pushers who aren't getting the safe comfy game they were expecting.

I suck at positional. HC has fangs AND claws AND lasers! your results may vary, but there isn't a single 1.d4 reply ive ever heard of that suits my "stick your fianchettos where stars don't shine" style better. If there was, I'd play that instead, but no brainer HC is just too much fun to want to look anymore

End rave, I mean transmission
