I suppose Spanish would be the thing you are looking for. What kind of a setup do you use in Italian though?

The Italian is great and you can keep that repertoire for a long period of time, don’t hop around openings every day. Settle for a repertoire and master it.

I don’t fear a man who has practiced 1000 openings once- I fear a man who has practiced 1 opening 1000 times.

Problem is, you can't always rely on getting an Italian.

Against me, you'd wind up in a French, and against others you'll get Sicilians, Caro-Kanns, Petroffs, etc.

That's gonna happen with every e4 opening. I like the Trompowsky because you play the same move basically no matter what.

Hehe - Dare you to do it against me! I play 1.d4 e6. If 2.e4, you are in a French. If 2.c4 or 2.Nf3, I play 2...f5 and avoid the 2.Bg5 Dutch and Gambit lines. 2.Bg5 Qxg5!

You can't play Trompowsky without Indian Game though?

once you get much higher rated you will realize that the italian is a bit slow and not as challenging as the ruy lopez, the ruy lopez is more agressive and fighting, and often you get c3-d4 without worrying about a knight taking on e4 as you do in the italian

compare the main lines

i love ruy lopez but it depends on your style
