Best equalizing defense against e4

 Although far from being a particularily strong player, I don't think Petroff equalizes so easily (except theoretically, and between very strong GMs): the variation with white going Sc3 + 0-0-0 is indeed highly tricky to counter. Black has no own play, and has to predict white's various ways of building up strong play on both flanks.

Yes, it would be really funny if a black player stopped playing the French due to this variation.

 The Philidor can lead to cramped positions -- I prefer space. I would choose either to support eh ee5 pawn with 2...Nc6 or to counterattack with 2...Nf6 (the Petrov

It can be kind of cramped but other systems such as the caro can be even more so
