Please don't play the french in a classical game. You'll end up in difficulties. It is ok in blitz.

Simon Williams would like to know your location.

Hello guys

I think nothing is best then French  defense or caro kann but best is french

Ladrithian

I don't claim to be an authority but here's my suggestions. Before you play these, consider how comfortable they are for you and please study their lines at least.

What I play

1. e4 1. c5 (The Sicilian Defense will ensure you mean to fight for the center and it can lead to many good chances and development opportunities for black. I recommend the Sveshnikov, Najdorf, and better yet just looking at a list of lines to see what works for you. It's the most played counter to 1. e4 at the master level as of now.)

1. e4 1. Nf6 (The Alekhine's Defense is a risky and generally worse opening but I use it as a little trick every now and then and the point is that white will either support their pawn which gives black a bit of tempo, gambit it which is usually pretty good for black, or push it and when they push it, you'll need be ready with lines to try and overextend whites pawns so that's the main point.)

What I don't play but maybe you should

1. e4 1. e5 (The Open Game)

1. e4 1. Nc6 (Nimzowitsch Defense)

1. e4 1. c6 (Caro-Kann Defense)

1. e4 1. d6 (Pirc Defense)

1. e4 1. e6 (French Defense)

1. e4 1. g6 (Modern Defense)
