Binds

Are they good? If there are pawns on c4 and e5 in one variation of the English, they dominate d5 but leave a weakness on d4.

atarw

everything depends on the position.

Vyomo

It does, but binds can be REALLY hard to deal with in some variations.

Example: Accelerated Dragon

^ that's not the accelerated dragon. Point of the accelerated dragon is NOT to play d6.

No, but it IS very likely to transpose to a Maroczy bind, which can come out of many openings (Benoni, English, etc)

A more normal move-order for a Maroczy bind is 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 g6 5.c4.

Conflagrationworld

Is it sound?

Expertise87

The Maroczy bind is very sound. It's extremely difficult for Black to get any winning chances. A related bind can occur after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.f3 intending c2-c4. This is also quite sound and difficult for Black to win. However, this can also be avoided by 3...Nf6.

Playing c4 and e4 blindly against everything, however, is not likely to be good.

It's true that black does not get many winning chances in the accelerated dragon: maroczy bind, but neither does white, it tends to be quite a drawish variation if both sides play well.

There are always those side variations that can really unbalance the game, though:

Well, I think like with any position, you ultimately have to rely on good chess. I can play against houdini from the most drawish of positions and still lose miserably Smile. I would say it's on the drawish side, but I still think that a stronger player, who is more patient and better knows the nuances of the position, can still probably beat the white side a fair amount of the time.

In fact, I have two specific ways:

1. White overextends, and the weaknesses he makes give black plenty of things to attack, and if black is the stronger player, it's almost like he won the game already.

2. White goes so far not to overextend or damage his position that he plays very passively, almost moving back and forth. In that case, white will probably start to get tired, and eventually lose alertness and may allow black to finally make one of his pawn breaks or tactical resources work, even if just for a tiny moment.

With perfect play, neither black nor white will be able to execute a strong idea, of course. However, black and white will always be able to threaten strong ideas Smile

Isn't that the accelerated dragon?

No that looks like the regular dragon more likely.

Was it really worth necroing a 7-year-old thread for that? lol
