Hey everybody,

My friend frequently uses this variation in Bird's Defense and I have little success against it.  What do you guys think would help against this?  Thanks!

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Not listed as a standard reply in NCO etc., but i'd say just Bc4, helping to prevent the inevetiable d5 thrust, with standard development after with a d3 to bully his queen....so a line would be:

6. Bc4  Nf6  7.d3 Qg6 8. Bf4 Be7 9. Nd2.....and you are way ahead in development.  If he goes for a Bh3 type of manover you have Bg3, or Qf3 to keep him in line.

Hope that helps! =D

I went through this on my chess program, and this does look pretty solid, I'll have to try it.  It was giving me a little difficulty mainly due to the lack of theory ;  I suppose that's just where more experience comes into play, ha!

Thanks very much, and take care!

If a game of this Quality was played in 1883, it requires great appreciation.

5....Qg5 doesn't look very good, white can get free tempo's on the queen, after defending Bb5 in some way, with usual d3, and f4 plan.

Update having checked database, I was not suprised to find there were no games with 5...Qg5.

I agree with the first guy, don’t take his knight on d4 with your knight, move the bishop to c4. My theory is that , if black proceeds to take whites kings knight with his queens knight then he’s just moved the same piece three times, with very little gain as white just captures the knight with his queen, developing another piece.  ( the book I’m reading at the moment says this breaks one of the cardinal rules of openings)

Bird's is an interesting defence, and tough for White to crack, but Qg5 can't be good. In the database I looked at (an out-of-date ChessBase one), White scores 78% with the simple Bc4, as recommended by rookdown.
