black defense

I apologise in advance if this seems like a daft question but I am slightly confused about openings. Here is my question:

If I play black and my response to e4 is c5 and white does not follow the Sicilian line, does it make sense for me to carry on in that line (without ignoring white's threats) or should I transpose to the line that my opponent is following?

Thank you for your time.

There is no such thing as following "the" Sicilian line -- after 1.e4 c5 White has many different options, and they all lead to different positions where different moves by black are best. It makes no sense to play a move in position X just because it's good in position Y.
