how to fight the 4 pawns attack
Black in the Kings indian

I love the KID, even though I lose more games with it than I win. I suspect that's because it's a pretty complex opening, and I'm a pretty simple guy.
Anyway, when I do get a win, it's pretty sweet!

i wouldnt say its too complicated, you just need to understand where and when you break in the center + how to play the benoni

Thanks for sharing this, its a great representation of blacks play in the fianchetto kings indian

Thanks.
I thought the game was a good example of the fairly common progression :
King's Indian => Panno => Knight exiled to Siberia => counter-attack against White's center

I didn't say it's too complicated. I just said it's complex. But the break didn't come in the center in my game; it came on the queenside. But I think white already went wrong with 8.Bh4. Better would have been 8.Bxf6. And if 10...Bxf6 9.Nf3 Qa5 10.Qd2 O-O 11.Bd3 and now it's white who's ready to break in the center.
The biggest problem for black is the Bayonet Attack of the Mar del Plata Variation

Most of the lines give black problems. Even in the mar dela Plata the Rc1 line gives black problems. The modern lines are even more restrictive.

this is my best KID win on chess.com.
it was a hard game and he was a very good player.

The Bayonet is pretty dangerous, but I don't know that it's any more problematic for black than the the Ne1 lines or the Yugoslav/modern (9.Nd2) lines. Anyway, some players have recently been doing well with Ne8 against the Bayonet attack.

Gligoric explains Ne8 as well as Nd7 in his book on the Mar del Plata.
it's amazing how much Kings Indian defense theory was actually figured out in the 1950s and 60s. But it goes in and out of fashion just to be remembered and forgotten.

Gligoric was an amazing player. And I've just discovered there's a film he contributed to, Requiem for Bobby Fischer (Serbia, 2010). I'm gonna' watch it online tonight. Hey, what do you know?! Now I've something to do on a Saturday night for a change!

my God man! go to the pub, grab a pint of Guinness, and play a round of darts! watch some cricket on the telly.
don't be an old chess geek like me! I think me and the cat are going to arrange the chess books tonight. I just don't know by alphabet or by opening.

Black has resources in the bayonnet and gets plenty of play.
The Ne1 lines are good but white has to play super accurately and quickly in order to show his advantage
and honestly 9.a5 refutes the 9.Nd2 10. b4 idea and is no good

both sides went wrong in this opening. the game transposed into a benoni which has different breaks and plans from the kings indian

Ah KID....it has been a while since I played the Kings Indian but here is one I was able to dig up out of the archives.....short and sweet! This was played in April of 2003. The venue was the old Atlanta Chess and games center. Anthonys Pizza was right next door and the Dekalb Farmers market was a couple blocks away. I played a lot of Kings Indian back in those days. Unfortunately, I no longer have records of most of those games. My computer got fried by a lightning induced power surge and I wasn't able to recover most of the KID games.
posting games of black in the kings indian for fellow kings indian players to look at and talk about
good plan for black in the more positional variations of the kings indian is to go for b5
