Black pressuring my bishop early.

Hello.  I'm fairly new to learning how to properly play Chess, and I have a question in regards to opening.  The person I'm playing against tends to attack my white bishop on c4 with pawns very early and I find myself either getting cramped in the corner, or with a poor pawn structure heading into midgame.  A typical opening might go like, 1. e4, d6. 2. Nf3, e5. Now here is where we find many different problems.  3. Bc4, c6. 4. 0-0, b5.  Of late I've been waiting to caslte, instead just keeping it ready so that I don't lose a move while he advances on my bishop.  Either way though very often I find myself blocking my pawns later, having trouble getting my knight out, due to pawn support on c3.  Looking for some tips, maybe on doing my opening out of typical order to acheive a good pawn structure, or some tips on places to secure my white bishop.  Thanks in advance all.

Hi steven welcome to chess !

First of all read this piece: http://exeterchessclub.org.uk/content/ten-rules-opening

It contains the important rules for the opening. The important rule in this case is "Move pieces not pawns" moving a pawn does not really count as development so if he plays c6 and b5 to kick your bishop and you need only 1 move to retreat it (to b3 for example) you are actually winning on development. Please note that castling is a development move so you are actually doing very good.

But you ofcourse wonder what you should do:

The rules of the opening state that if you are ahead in the opening you should open lines. A move like d4 comes to mind. His king is not that save in the center en opening central lines with d4 can be very dangerous. He needs atlease 3 moves to bring his king in safety !

However do be carefull Black can also play a5 trying to lock in your bishop. However this is again not a development move so you can probably can do very well there.

Thanks, there are some games where I end up losing my bishop due to a5, however I try to press a4 so I can open my rook.  I think just working on pushing open my c/d files once I'm castled will really help a lot also.  I'm trying to figure out pawn structure that starts to push space, more often than not I find myself block them with peices.
