Blackmar Diemer Gambit only viable in rapid time or less?

Hi all,

I love playing the Blackmar Diemer Gambit but I feel like it may only be a viable option in games less than 30 minutes. Attacks are usually strong out of the opening but maybe in slow games they're too easily seen ith a lot of time on peoples hands, as well as too easily seen by strong players (2000+) which is why it's rarely played at the top level. Also, don't tell anyone but the Vienna Variation seems to just be equal for black after few moves.

What does everyone else think about this opening? I'll be interested to hear replies.

I don't like this kind of openings a lot, but well that's my opinion. I think that you have a very good rating so you should play more principal lines, like indians or Dutch. Anyway, it is a very good choise if you are an agressive player and you want an interesting game.

I think the opening you choose has nothing to see with the time of the game.

Avrukh may have put the final nails in the coffin, but nobody who ought to be worrying about grandmaster level repertoires was sweating the Blackmar anyway.

The Blackmar is probably fine at any speed up to 2000 or so, and higher than that the faster the time controls (as has been proven many times on ICC).  It's not a serious try, but it doesn't pretend to be.  It's a great practical weapon, but one pretty easily sidestepped, too.

When i read questions like this I am reminded of a quote apparently accreditted to Nigel Short:

"The biggest fallacy in chess is the quasi-religious belief in the primacy of the opening."
