I think semi-slav is a very solid but dynamic defense against the QGD for black.
Meran lines are generally straightforward for black, even if white plays 6. Qc2. Cambridge Springs after 5. Bg5 Nbd7 is often regarded as an opening for "amateurs".
Is it playable at a high level? Seems popular still among top GMs today.
