LONG LIVE KID!
Can Someone Recommend a System vs the KID?
I like the samisch and the main line with the bayonett attack. If I feel confident preparation and theory-wise I'll go for the baynoett attack if not I'll go for the samisch. Both are worth a try!
You might consider playing like Petrosian. The (duh) Petrosian KID is built around dominating the central white squares, defusing black's kingside ambitions, and then advancing on the opposite wing. It's strategically fairly simple, and has pretty obvious counters to non-standard moves such as what to do if black tries to force in an awkward and early ...f5.
Then, the Russian against the Grunfeld. Qb3, followed by Qxc4 after the inevitable capture by black, then e4, d5, and you're once again playing on the central white squares, makin a strongpoint of d5 to make black's play of attacking the center from the flanks as difficult as possible.
Alternatively, you could just avoid the whole business with the Tromp or the Torre (depending how many options you want to allow black). Or even in Barry/150 style, which is usually paired with a London or Colle, but there's no reason you can't play 3.c4 against 2...d5, Hebden style, as long as you don't mind Nf3 lines against QGA's, and aren't dead-set on playing the exchange QGD with Nge2 lines.
The Saemisch is one of the most complex openings to play. If you are an advanced player, then it may make sense. Another system for advanced players is to learn the various K-side fianchetto ideas, as Avrukh recommends.
For most players though, the best system to learn is probably the Classical Mar del Plata line. This is a common-sense approach where white occupies the center and gets normal development. The game becomes a race between white's Q-side advance and Black's K-side attack. White will almost always get there first, but since the King is on g1, Black's attack is usually more dangerous.
Strategically, the game is easy to understand, and it's just a matter of working out tactics. This is ideal for most players. Yes, it does play into Black's hands, but it is sound and played by most of the very best players in the world.
I want to renew this thread. I am a lot higher rated than I was when I first posted it, but I still have yet to find a line that I am comfortable playing consistently against the KID. I tried a lot of Bf4 and Bg5 + e3 systems as recommended by GMs Akobian and Finegold. However, these seem to allow equality via c5, Bf5, Ne4 and black is doing fine, taking advantage of white's inability to play e4 himself.
I really don't want to play the super theoretical main lines, as I am mainly preparing for a tournament eight days from now and I am already studying enough Sicilian and Slav theory and all kinds of other stuff. With the Mar del Plata, there are so many sidelines that can pop up, and also I would have to know at least fifteen oves of theory in the mainline, which I guess I could learn but I really don't want to. I am playing in the Maryland Open U2000 section on the first weekend of May.
The Fianchetto lines do look somewhat appealing to me, but then I feel they are very subtle and I have a hard time finding concrete plans that I can play for out of the opening. I would really appreciate the advice of some strong (preferrably at least expert) players.
Thanks in advance.
If you are looking for an easy answer to the KID, then the Fianchetto isn't it.
If you really want something simple that you could play forever, take a look at early Bg5 lines. They are non-standard, and give White equality. Don't for one instant think you're playing for a theoretical advantage there, but at least you can develop your own theories and your own ideas.
Here's one game to get you started:
As white I prefer both the saemisch and the classical KID , usually playing the bayonet attack . Both have a lot of theory though so might not be what you want . As black I always hated facing the fianchetto systems because I didnt get my usual dangerous attacks against the white king ... The kid has lost a lot of its popularity it seems , what I face most these days are nimzos , gruenfelds and slavs ...
@OP If you dont like the exchange gruenfeld as white then I recommend the line 4 Bf4 and 5 e3 . Petrosian used this line to crush Fischer in game 2 of their candidates match and this line was also used by Capablanca . I like the exchange lines as white but have also used this line as well as the russian system .
I'll definitely second the Classical Variation of the Grunfeld! Take a look at the games of Alexey Dreev for inspiration. For me, the White side of the Grunfeld isn't a huge problem. I know that Black must be prepared to face all sorts of opening schemes that promise White a very small advantage. Black has an olympian task memorizing all the different lines.
If everyone played the Exchange, then Black's task in the Grunfeld would be much easier. Sadly for Black, white has numerous ways to fight for an advantage. The Grunfeld is an excellent correspondence weapon, but even at the elite levels it is too much to learn. Peter Svidler and a few others do champion it, but they spend a large portion of their training time just keeping up!
To be clear, I do believe the Exchange Variation offers white a very small edge, but Black will be prepared to play those lines. Play something else and see how well prepared they are in the other critical lines!
Boris Avrukh recommends fianchetto lines against both the KID and the Grunfeld. The main problems with his repertoire is that it is extremely subtle and detailed, and even if you play them perfectly White only gets a very small edge.
Samisch? I didn't play it perfectly in that diagram, but it gets space and you don't need to castle queenside if you don't want to...
I, personally, play the four-pawns attack. It all depends on whether you're looking for a tactical variation or a more slow-paced one.
I was looking at this article:

What does everyone think of that line?
Hey, guys. I have been looking at a lot of different systems against the KID and against the Grunfeld and I'm really not sure what I'd like to play. I play the Queen's Gambit as white and I run into these openings and I try different setups all the time ( i.e. Fianchetto Variation, Sämisch Variation, Grunfeld Exchange, etc.) and I really don't know what to play against these lines. Is there any simple but solid way to play against the King's Indian that has very clear strategies for white? And is there anything similar against the Grunfeld; I hate the Grunfeld Exchange. Thanks, guys.
