The problem with 1.e4 is that black has some well known routes to equality.  However with 1.Nf3 white's initiative is still there but takes a much subtler form.  The drawback however is it's easier for black to copy white's setup, so making mirroring unviable is necessary at some point.

1.d4 is a great option as it's hard for black to maintain symmetry:

no. too many double-edged opening possibilities like the grunfeld, benoni, and many other strange openings that can surprise you. I would much rather play against d4 than e4
