I would personally steer clear of caro-kann it's not one of the strongest responses as black in my opinion

Anatoly Karpov did not share that opinion: he played the Caro-Kann more than 250 times. There really is nothing wrong with the defense, except possibly as a matter of taste. I played it for a time many years ago and never got comfortable with it. It just didn't suit me, but that doesn't make it bad.

"... If you play 1 e4, then you have to be ready for a wide array of defences. The Sicilian, Caro-Kann, French, and 1...e5 are all huge topics, ... But ... there are numerous other less common but still highly respectable defences for which one must be prepared. The Alekhine, Modern, Pirc, Scandinavian, and others all require serious attention, ... I have laid out a comprehensive repertoire for White against each of the aforementioned openings, plus all other irregular defences after 1 e4 which fall outside of the 'big four'. ..." - IM Greet

You might want to ask about a specific variation.

Indeed. True. There is the Classical variation, Karpov line, the Bronstein-Larsen. You know, as a CK player (I play the Karpov & Bronstein-Larsen lines btw) I really dont have any tips & tricks per se; I've expounded general strategy in other forums but that was in comparison to the French. And most importantly, there were mostly vets & intermediate players in there who have some experience. I guess my advice to you is just to play the Caro Kann without any expectations. There are no "secrets" in Chess. Forget about ratings or wins & losses. Equalize with black, then fish for something. Develop chess understanding more than just "looking" for something "new". Develop your Chess Philosophy-whether it be with the CK, Sicilian, French, Pirc or DKP openings. Best wishes 😉
