Thanks, Smnrkssn! I haven't come across this idea yet of 4...Nd7 over 4...Bf5. I usually go with Bf5. Also, thank you for the main idea behind it, too!
Caro-Kann (Nd7)

Hi guys!
Still quite a newbie to chess in general, especially to openings and opening theory. I have a two questions in regards to the Caro-Kann defense...
1.) What is the function of the eventual knight to d7 move? I feel it's quite awkward considering there's usually a pawn sitting on d4. Is it simply development? Is it there for the eventual pawn push c6-c5?
2.) What is the general idea behind this chosen defense? Does anyone have any tips or things to look out for? Nothing too deep, but just some general points would really help my study.
In the meantime I am doing some reading in the FCO book I purchased. Thanks in advance, guys and gals!
